Waiting and Hastening

June 2, 2026

In today's first reading for Mass, St. Peter tells us that we are supposed to be "waiting for" and "hastening" the coming of Jesus. Whether that is a spiritual coming to a certain situation, or His final coming at the end of the world, that is an interesting combination of actions. We are to "wait for" it, which means we let it happen. Yet, we are also supposed to "hasten" it, which means that we bring it about sooner.

The mixture might be hard to recognize, but it is powerful. Patience at the work of God is needed, while we are doing the work of spreading the gospel so that the Kingdom of God grows in this world. While we do not know "the day or the hour" we do know that we are a part of what God is doing, and He uses us to bring about His will. Let us trust Him and continue to fulfill our calling to show the world the glory of Christ.
