Someone recently commented that he did not like the term "Novus Ordo". I respectfully disagreed. It was not an argument, just a discussion about the challenges and problems with the "Mass of Paul VI". The reason I prefer the term "Novus Ordo" is that it is correct. Novus Ordo means, "new order", and that is a perfectly accurate term to describe this rite of the Mass. No one will deny that it has an order to it; that order may be frequently abused and stretched, but it is an "order". Furthermore, it is truly "new" in the fullest sense of that term. The Novus Ordo was literally invented in the 1960's and (contrary to every form of the Mass before) it had no "parent" Mass that it came from.
Therefore, those who want to eliminate every other form of the Mass are showing what lies underneath their motivations. They want all that is attached to the historic Tradition of the Mass to be done away with. They are following a "new order" of "new is better than old" so they want the "new order" of the Mass to push out the "old order(s)" of the Mass. Although they rarely mention the other forms of the Mass, this usually centers on their desire to banish the Latin Mass, and occasionally the Divine Worship (i.e. Ordinariate) form of the Mass.
It truly is a "new order" for anyone who is Catholic to attempt to reduce the Mass to a single form or rite. Early in the history of the Church, there were different forms of the Mass and there always has been. The development of the Mass in different areas of Europe, Asia Minor, and North Africa are well known. They eventually flowed into two predominant forms: the Eastern, and Western. Yet, the Church has always acknowledged that there are varying ways to celebrate the one Mass. To attempt to overturn that practice is not Catholic. Uniformity was never encouraged in the Mass, unity was; and unity does not imply merely one form.
There is an interesting twist to this whole thing. Those who want just one form of the Mass say it is for the sake of unity. Yet, in the "one" form of the Novus Ordo, there are so many options that it would be proper to say that the Novus Ordo is itself thousands of different forms of the Mass. Hence, to cry out for "one form of the Mass for the sake of unity" is a misrepresentation. What they are seeking is to destroy other forms so that they can have their thousands of ways of doing Mass. This is not Catholic.
