Maybe you saw the video online recently where the woman came into a Mass and attacked the blessed Sacrament right at the altar rail. She sneakily grabbed the small chalice that the priest was using to distribute by intinction (the same method we use at St. George) and threw it on the ground. May God have mercy on her wicked soul (though we know we are supposed to do so, it is not easy).
I am in no way criticizing the priest being tricked in that instance; I do not know how I would have responded. I do know, however, that I am now on the alert even more than before (what a blessing for us to be aware that this evil happens so we can watch for it). I am generally suspicious when strangers come up to the altar rail in Mass and often am looking to see if there will be some kind of misunderstanding. I never enjoy telling someone they have to receive on the tongue when they are expecting to have me put the Sacrament in their hand; but I must do so.
In the instance I mentioned above, the devil showed his cards. We already knew that He hates Christ and His Church, and that he does what he can to desecrate it, but he made it clear that he is using his followers to come right up to the rail in open sight and violate our Lord. We live in days that are very different than when I was a kid. People today seem to show no knowledge of the sacred, and have no sense of guilt for abusing Catholics and the faith. In fact, many seem to rejoice in disrespect and irreverence as though it were a virtue. We live in the midst of a "sinful and wicked generation"; let us work to stand as "lights in the midst of this darkness".
