Have you ever heard of Pope Lando? No, I am not joking. Even without the similar reference to a Star Wars character, his name sounds a bit quirky to modern ears. Here is what I like about Pope Lando. He was elected Pope in A.D. 913, and died six months later (that is not a sarcastic insult). The only action we know about specifically is that he granted a special privilege to a church in his native land. The only detail we know about his personal integrity is that he was a good and holy man.
What a great blessing it is to have so little known about you that people have little possibility of staining your name. He was certainly not insignificant; he was a Pope after all! Yes, he only had a short reign on the seat of Peter, but God chose him for his task and used him for a specific purpose. The point of having a Pope is not so that he will become famous, or even that he will do something historic. The point of a Pope is that he stay faithful and transmit the unchanging deposit of faith to subsequent generations. He is not supposed to make a name for himself, but point to the Name of Jesus.
Pope Lando did his job. He did it quietly, and without fanfare (at least to us). Each of us has a place in the Kingdom of God and we should not aim at it being big and grand for all to see and everyone to remember (because that is usually driven by pride). We should aim at being faithful and having God be pleased with our work, even if no one ever knows what we did. Let us make sure that we do what we are called to do, whether it is long and drawn out, or it is brief; it is the work of God Almighty.
